Umbrellas and parasols (and snakes!) are frequent devices in Emily's paintings. There's no hidden meaning; she finds them graphically interesting. It turns out that Emily has a 19th century NY ancestor who was an umbrella maker. (No snake-charmers though.)Dance With Serpent, 2007, oil on canvas, 11" x 14"
